Riley bashes Corps over water releases

The ongoing feud over water between Alabama, Georgia, and Florida hit a new level as Governor Bob Riley condemns the Corps plans to reduce hydropower releases from Lake Allatoona by 50 percent.

“This decision will cause serious environmental damage to the state of Alabama, and it has the high likelihood of causing serious disruptions to Alabama’s public water supply, electric power grid and industrial workforce,” Governor Riley wrote in his letter to Col. Byron Jones, the commander of the Corps of Engineer’s Mobile District. 

Governor Riley also called the decision “reckless, unjustified and punitive.” He called the decision one of many in a trend of the Corps deciding against Alabama’s needs.
